One of the newest RCI-affiliated properties lies just north of the Spanish border in France’s idyllic Roussillon region, where Picasso, Georges Braque and Henri Matisse came to paint. Malibu Village is a complex of Provençal-style villas and apartments (fully equipped and air-conditioned) and a luxury hotel, all surrounded by lush gardens. The Village also has five restaurants, six pools, a gym, tennis courts and live entertainment. (malibu-village.com)
From Malibu Village, it’s only a half-hour drive to Collioure, the pretty Mediterranean fishing village that Matisse discovered in 1905. He stayed to capture the yellow-sand beaches, terra-cotta roofs and stunning views of the Pyrenees. Since then, the town’s fishing shacks have been converted to shops and restaurants serving wine from vineyards just outside town. Malibu is also only 17 miles from Perpignan, where Salvador Dali is said to have experienced “cosmological ecstasy.”
